Glasgow city council has launched an architectural competition for the replacement of two B-listed tenement blocks which were destroyed by fire.

The two corner buildings in Glasgow’s Pollockshields conservation area were lost to fires in 2019 and 2020, leaving a prominent gap in the area’s townscape.

The two-stage contest is calling for architects to submit design proposals for both sites as part of a shared vision for the crossroads, called Albert Cross.

Practices will be asked to submit an initial concept design, with three entrants to be awarded £10,000 each to further develop their designs with cost plans before a winner is selected.

Ruairi Kelly, Glasgow council member for housing, development and built heritage, said the council is looking for “exceptional and exciting designs” to “restore vibrancy” to the area.

Interested practices have until 21 September to request to participate with a winner to be announced later this year.
