Wilkinson Eyre is working with insurance giant AmTrust on plans for an office tower in the heart of the City of London which is reportedly set to be taller than 22 Bishopsgate.

The practice is named as lead architect in an online preview of a public consultation on the scheme set to open next week on Bishopsgate.

Others working on the project include development manager Upper Brook, multi-disciplinary engineer WSP, planning consultant Bidwells, landscape architect SLA, surveyor GIA, cultural consultant Future City and engagement consultant Kanda, according to the website.

Upper Brook is a development company founded last year by George Iacobescu, the former chief executive and former chairman of Canary Wharf Group, and George Stow, the chief executive of luxury residential developer St John’s Wood Square.

The building would replace Exchequer Court, a 1990s building at 33 St Mary Axe located directly opposite the Gherkin, with grade A office space and a new cultural destination which “complements nearby heritage assets”, AmTrust said.

The scheme would also contain an elevated, publicly accessible landscaped garden, a public courtyard at street level, new pedestrian routes and activated ground floor spaces.

According to multiple media reports over the weekend, the tower could be as tall as 70 storeys. This would make it taller than PLP’s 62-storey 22 Bishopsgate, which is currently the tallest building in the City of London.

The tower would also be the second tallest building in the Square Mile behind Eric Parry’s 74-storey One London, the building previously known as 1 Undershaft which is currently under construction.

One London has long been envisaged as the peak of the City’s main tower cluster with buildings stepping down in height around it. AmTrust’s proposed tower would be located directly adjacent and to the north of One London, south of Allies and Morrison’s 40-storey 100 Bishopsgate and west of Foster + Partners’ 41-storey Gherkin.

Other towers currently in development in the immediate vicinity include RSHP’s 54-storey 99 Bishopsgate, Fletcher Priest’s 46-storey 63 St Mary Axe and David Chipperfield’s 22-storey 133 Houndsditch.
