Team sought for £1.2m job lasting 17 months

Carrow Works site

Homes England has acquired the 17ha Carrow Works site on the eastern edge of Norwich

Norwich city council and Homes England are looking for an architect to design the first phase of a “major new urban extension” on the edge of Norwich.

The public tender notice follows Homes England’s acquisition of a 17ha former industrial site called Carrow Works, which is part of a wider regeneration area to the east of the city which the council has earmarked for up to 3,500 new homes.

Homes England said the Carrow Works site, which is close to both the riverside and Norwich city centre, represents a “significant opportunity to deliver a high-quality, thriving neighbourhood”.

The council said it is now seeking to appoint an “experienced and ambitious” design team of architects, masterplanners and landscape specialists on a £1.2m contract lasting for an initial period of 17 months.

Norwich said the job offer was a “rare opportunity to establish the character, quality and long term trajectory of a new urban village, transforming a substantial former industrial site into a distinctive, well connected and sustainable place to live”.

The deadline for enquiries is 8 April, with submission of tenders required by 22 April and an award expected to be issued on 8 May.

Along with new homes, the wider East Norwich regeneration area is set to feature a new employment space, public spaces, and improved access to the rivers Wensum and Yare, The Broads and surrounding green spaces.
