Grainger Market has been at site for nearly 200 years
FaulknerBrowns has unveiled images of its completed overhaul of the grade I-listed Grainger Market in Newcastle.
The indoor market has been at the site since 1835 with the refurbishment by Scottish contractor Robertson delivering two new pavilions at either end of the main arcade.
Work also included new tiling, upgraded entrances, improved wayfinding and refurbished toilets. Externally, the market now features new paving, signage and planting.
Robertson’s regional managing director for the North-east Neil Kennedy said: “The transformative work carried out ensures this Grade I listed building will continue to play a crucial role in the city centre for years to come. Importantly, the market remained fully operational throughout our works which have improved sustainability and created new spaces.”
Others on the job included civil and structural engineer WSP, M&E engineer TGA and cost consultant Gleeds.
The project was funded by £8.2m from the government’s Levelling Up Fund and £800,000 from the council.
